Permit Improvement Program
The Marin Association of REALTORS®, working with [local jurisdictions] and [partner organizations], launched the Permit Improvement Program in 2026 to make permitting easier for Marin homeowners, buyers, sellers, and the real estate professionals who serve them. Permit delays and unpermitted work can stall remodels, complicate closings, and create surprises during a sale. Our goal is a better experience for property owners and more safe, legal building across Marin County.
Phase I: Listening and Measuring
We gather feedback from people who have recently been through the permit process using surveys, focus groups, and interviews, and we research best practices in other jurisdictions. The findings, along with recommendations to improve procedures, systems, and customer service, are compiled into a report presented to the jurisdiction.
Phase II and Beyond: Measuring Progress
We repeat the surveys and focus groups to track improvement and review the jurisdiction’s internal workflow to find where permits slow down. Jurisdictions can also opt into an outreach campaign that highlights their successes to the community.
